Hey Phill - thanks for the info.

For a while I was fascinated by the Mike Mentzer approach and went a bit HIT. I really enjoyed that.

From your description it sounds like you're training for size, not strength. Going to failure means you're building the wrong type of muscle - the one that looks good rather than the type that's functional.

Try "leaving a few in the tank" rather than going to failure, and aim for explosive muscle contractions and slow extensions. So, for a bench press you'll explode the bar up, then bring it down slowly over say 5 seconds.

Also try either dropping the weight or sets/reps; the body doesn't need much stimulus to trigger the growth hormone, only that things aren't kept repetitive. Slowly increasing the weight is all that's needed, and if you're not going to fail you'll find that you don't ache as much and your muscles aren't as tight. Stretching them after each set will help keep them loose also.

Check out the Stronglifts 5x5 program; it's a routine you can do in under 20mins, hits all the muscles, and can be done in such a way as to supplement your wing chun training (if you aim for explosive power rather than size).
